About.

Gerard Avila LeDoux, born 1949, is an American visual artist, composer, and cello player, living and working in Providence, Rhode Island.

LeDoux has no formal art training, but his drawings have a fresh and direct aspect, with a geometric precision, emerging from an outsider’s  imagination. Earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Rhode Island College, LeDoux is also a talented cellist and composer.

With a disciplined and daily routine of writing, drawing and composing, LeDoux stays present and open to his stream of creativity.  Art may inspire music or music inspire art.  A constant, creative cross-pollination thrives in his small home studio which serves as art space and music room.

LeDoux states “Working in Prismacolor art pencil, I create works to unleash fluidity and vitality with geometric precision, aligning with the musical, the literal, and the artistic concepts of composition”.

LeDoux began his life as a musician as a teenager, learning to play guitar and bass guitar by ear, listening to the music of The Beatles, The Lovin' Spoonful, and The Rolling Stones.  Other influences include Terje Rydal and  Jaco Pastorius, among others.  In his early twenties, LeDoux made the decision to learn a new instrument and started lessons on the cello, working with teachers Shirley Adams and Sylvia Rosenthal.  He performed and composed music for The Rhode Island Shakespeare Theater,  Down Right Theater and Moonlight Theater Company in the 1970s and 1980s.  During his years at Rhode Island College, LeDoux studied cello with George Mack, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music degree in 1990.

LeDoux has continued composing in an athletic, chromatic and modern style, with compositions for solo cello, flute and cello, and small ensembles.
